Movie Pick of the Week
Last evening my spouse and I saw a fabulous movie based on a true story. United Kingdom was a perfectly crafted and beautifully acted film about apartheid in the country that is now Botswana. “In 1947, Seretse Khama, the King of Botswana, met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments. The latter had recently introduced the policy of apartheid and found the notion of a biracial couple ruling a neighboring country intolerable. South Africa threatened the British: either thwart the couple or be denied access to South African uranium and gold and face the risk of South Africa invading Botswana.” Rotten Tomatoes
Strangely, Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a 84% while the audience gave it a 81%. My hubby and both agreed that on our scale of 1-10 it was a solid 9! Excellent film that I heartily encourage you to see.

I highly recommend Allied starring Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard. It was a must see for me as I write stories that occur during World War II specifically for this film 1942. This one takes a different turn in that “an intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war. two spies, fall in love, and one of them must make a life-altering decision.” No spoilers from me. It is beautifully photographed although I learned from reading another review that much of the film was shot on studio lots. Couldn’t have known from the realism of the sets. Costumes were accurate for the time period and I cannot fail to mention the artful direction of Robert Zemeckis of Forest Gump fame. I will want to buy this one for my DVD collection – it is one of those that I will watch over and over.
Go see the Free State of Jones. It is Matthew McConaughey’s latest and I think one of his best! As I love “period films” with all the costumes of the period this film did not disappoint me. There was some bloodshed as it does take place during the Civil War in the deep south. Photography was excellent! I don’t want to give away spoilers but it is a period of the Civil War that I knew nothing about including the Klan! Shame on me! But do go see it – it will keep you entertained for the 2 hrs. 19 min. it is on the screen.
